European stock markets are likely to open lower before the crucial U.S. labor data Thursday, while strategists have mixed assessments for the second half of the year.

“In the second half of 2009, we expect equities to build on the rally which started in the second quarter,” said Tony Shepard, strategist at the brokerage Charles Stanley.
“Equities have yet to price in an economic recovery,” he said.

HSBC said in a note that policymakers “may have averted a prolonged spell in the financial wilderness but the progress seen so far could yet prove to be the easiest part of the recovery, with a number of formidable, structural challenges awaiting on the horizon.”
